August Writers’ Meeting

Today we held our August meeting for JWB. We will have NO September meeting. We will have a full day of writing events on Saturday Sept. 15 with our workshop and book release party for TS21, but no meeting. The next meeting will be on Sunday, Oct. 21, 2012 from 12:30 to 3 PM at Bella Caffe in Park Rapids MN.

Jerry, Niomi, Mike, Sharon

Sharon drove to Bemidji to have several of her poems recorded at the radio station. They have a morning show (7:30 or 7:45 AM) now where they will play recorded poems by local writers. This program is called the Beat. Check it out.

We now have the books in hand, though we cannot hand them out till the book release party on Sat. Sept. 15. They turned out great, using CreateSpace this time instead of our usual Morris Printing. Morris is a very good, punctual company. We think that CreateSpace will save us money and time.

We now have 30 people signed up for the workshop with Linda Lein on the morning of Saturday, Sept. 15, 2012, from 9 AM to 12 Noon at Blueberry Pines Golf Club south of Park Rapids on Highway 71. The Book Release party starts at 1 and will probably run till approximately 5 PM. We are looking forward to the new location. We could possibly take a few more for the workshop if anyone needs to sign up late. Three of us from the Board of Directors will be finalizing details soon.

Several of us sold books at the Hackensack Book & Art Festival in Hackensack on Saturday, Aug. 18. It was a long grueling day, but also lots of fun. It is always great to see writer friends. It was a gloriously sunny but cool day. Right at the very end, there was a cloudburst and thunder and lightning and hail! We hope everyone got their things covered up safely.

Check out the Slate Online Journal.
Check out Your Book Starts Here by Mary Carroll Moore. This book has great tips like using a story board, character lines throughout the book, story lines, and time lines.
Check out Tessa Hadley’s book Sunstroke. Great short stories.
Check out the Loft. Their Fall Catalog of classes is out. They recently had a fundraiser for the Loft.
We had an excellent meeting today. Jerry is making progress on his next book. Niomi and Mike also have ideas for putting together books of their own. Sharon is happily selling copies of her poetry book Unspoken, recently at Hackensack, and ongoing at Tarah is also selling her fantasy novel, Embraced by Darkness, Book One: Sacrifices, on and recently at Hackensack.
Hope to see you next time!
