Mary told us to check out www.tigerlion.org for Tigerlion Arts, Nature for the Nation, a walking play. Touring the MidwestJuly-October 2015. The outdoor telling of Emerson, Thoreau, and their mutual love of the natural world. Mary loved it.

Mike told us he had been in a play once where he played the King of the Fairies. We need to hear more about this.

We had a short but excellent meeting where many of us read and the others critiqued. We always enjoy the encouragement from our fellow writers.

June Writers’ Meeting

Hi Everyone,

Today we held our June meeting. The next meeting will be held on Sunday, July 19, 2015, from 12:30 to 3 PM at Bella Caffe in Park Rapids MN.

PRESENT: Ryan, Niomi, Mike, Sharon, Mary

TALKING STICK 24:    The editing is basically done. We will be ordering our first proof soon.

RECENT WRITING EVENTS:

  • Our Nimrod 6 event was greatly enjoyed by all attendees. Dialogue was the topic this year. We had a special guest, Faith Sullivan, who attended the last part of the event. As usual, wonderful food, great prompts, a lot of learning. Sharon joined them on Sunday to hear the readings.
  • Marlys is attending the Northwoods Writers Conference in Bemidji. We hope she will have a report for us at our next meeting.
  • We hope Jerry will have a report from New York Mills and other events when he returns for the next meeting. We need to discuss PRLAAC in September at that time.
  • Lake Region Writers Network has disbanded. We are sorry to hear that.

SUGGESTED ITEMS: Book: All the Light we Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. Several of our members expressed how much they enjoyed this book. Primrose.com is a place that gives assignments and publishes writing. I’ll try to get the website address and put it in next month’s minutes. James Patterson Master Class. Ryan told us about this. It is more for beginning writers and is very encouraging. https://www.masterclass.com/classes/james-patterson-teaches-writing.

Most of us brought things to read and the rest critiqued. Another good meeting with lively comments. Hope to see you next time!

May Writers’ Meeting

Hi Everyone. Our next meeting will be held on Sunday, June 21, 2015, at Bella Caffe in Park Rapids MN from 12:30 to 3 PM.

PRESENT: Ryan, Jan, Sharon, Deb, Elisa, Jerry, Marlys, Mary, Lina

TALKING STICK 24 PROGRESS: We are busy working on the proofreading. We want to get this done earlier than normal this year since Tarah is so busy finishing her house remodel and her wedding is coming up!

WRITING EVENTS: Jerry attended the Midwest Book Awards event on May 13, 2015. He was a finalist with his Good Shepherd book but did not win. Congrats on being a finalist, Jerry! There were over 300 people at the event and was very enjoyable.

UPCOMING EVENTS: The Loft/Lake Region classes are in progress. Jerry and Elisa are attending one of them with Kate St. Vincent Vogel as instructor and they are enjoying it immensely.

Sinclair Lewis Writers Conference, 10-10-15. www.saukherald.com/writers for more information.

WRITING PROMPTS:  This was a good prompt that one of the attendees shared from the Kate St. Vincent Vogel class:

  • Write down:
  • 3 important events in your life,
  • 3 important people in your life
  • 3 important things in your life,
  • 3 important places in your life,
  • 3 important secrets in your life.
  • Choose one from each category and write 400 words about those items.

Good tip: Starting your book or story with dialogue is generally not the best way. In some cases, it will work. In most cases, you need to use your opening lines to do these things: give you the narrator’s voice, point of view of the book, and show what conflict will be in the book.

Many of us read items we had written. The rest of us critiqued. Again today, we had spirited conversations and we hated to quit talking and go home! We love it when that happens.

Hope to see you next time!
