For many years, we supported ourselves with donations, book sales, and a few grants. However, it is becoming increasingly difficult for us to fund our books. Without your support and donations, there would be no Jackpine Writers’ Bloc and no Talking Stick books. Remember, your tax donation is tax deductible. We are a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization.

May 20th 2007

Today was our May 20, 2007 meeting at Bella Cafe in Park Rapids MN from 12:30 to 3 PM. We enjoyed our new meeting place, complete with coffee, tea, etc. The back room was very spacious and pleasant. We will try them again. Present today: Sharon, Tarah, Niomi, Jerry, Nancy, Russ, Scott, Jodi, LuAnne.

The next meeting will be on June 17, 2007 from 12:30 to 3 PM, also at Bella Cafe.

TALKING STICK 16:
We had our Editorial Board meeting yesterday, May 19. On the board were: Sharon, Tarah, Scott, Nancy and Louise. We had a good time and finished in record time. We are now ready to send selections to the judges, work on the layout, send out contracts, etc.
Three judges: William Kent Kruger for Fiction, Bill Holm for Creative Nonfiction, CarolAnn Russell for Poetry.
Last year, we received submissions from 148 writers. This year, due to earlier deadline, we received submissions from 116 writers.

2007 WRITING EVENTS:
June 9–LouAnn Shepard Muhm workshop–Getting Poems Published, 9:30 to 4:30 Park Rapids Library
June 24–Golf Tournament at Fair Havens Golf near Park Rapids MN–18 hole 4 man scramble, sign in at 1 PM, shotgun start at 2 PM.
July 14–LouAnn Shepard Muhm workshop–How to Get Started Writing Poetry, 9:30 to 4:30 at Park Rapids Library
July 28–LouAnn Shepard Muhm workshop–Poetry Manuscript Preparation, 9:30 to 4:30 Park Rapids Library
August 11–Annual Celebration at Northwoods Bank Community Room in Park Rapids and workshop with William Kent Kruger (fiction judge) 1:30 to 4:30. (Annual Celebration follows the workshop).
August 25–Hackensack Book Arts Festival
November–Novel in a Month Promotion
November 10–Book Release Party, location undecided

WRITING OPPORTUNITIES:
Brainerd Writers Alliance has put out a call for submissions for their next contest. Entries are due by August. For more information, contact Candace Simar at simar@tds.net.

MISCELLANEOUS:
One of our members thought that we should think about including the BWA winners in our TS book. We will contact them to see if they are interested in that.
Scott Stewart will be putting on Business Writing workshops in June and July in North Carolina, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Kentucky. He will also be doing some Community Ed classes in Park Rapids this fall.
