November Meeting Minutes 2014
Hi Everyone,
Today we held our November meeting. Please join us for our next meeting on Sunday, December 21, 2014, at Bella Caffe in Park Rapids MN from 12:30 to 3 PM.
PRESENT:
Sharon, Mike, Mary, Jerry, Jan, Ryan, Marlys.
WRITING EVENTS:
Sharon has completed her third online class at the Loft. This one was The Art of Finding Poetry with Sarah Rose Nordgren. It lasted 8 weeks and was great fun. The class involved writing down things you notice, finding the sources where your writing comes from, working with sounds and colors, etc.
NANOWRIMO is on right now. Marlys is doing it this year. During the month of November, many writers are taking up the challenge of writing a rough draft of a 50,000 word novel in one month. Go to www.nanowrimo.org for more information so you can try it next year.
RECOMMENDED READING:
“Falling” by James Dickey, a long, lovely poem about a very sad true event.
Jane Hirshfield’s book on Haiku.
Check out poetry by Edith Sodergran and Lorine Niedecker.
COMING WRITING EVENTS:
Bloomington Writers Festival and Book Fair, March 28, 2015.
Lpettit@gowebway.com. Jerry will be attending.
Those of us in Talking Stick 23 have a chance of being asked to record their writing and have it on the radio at KAXE. You might get a phone call.
MISCELLANEOUS:
We have talked now and then about pacing. John, a writer who hasn’t attended for a while but keeps in touch, said that he recommends Mary Oliver’s poems. The way she steps through a poem is remarkable. She uses very clever phrases to slow the pace.
Thanks to everyone who donated to us, either directly, or through GiveMN recently.
Everyone who attended today brought something to read. We are always so happy with the quality of the writing our attendees bring with them. We cheerfully critique and encourage.
Hope to see you next time!
