For many years, we supported ourselves with donations, book sales, and a few grants. However, it is becoming increasingly difficult for us to fund our books. Without your support and donations, there would be no Jackpine Writers’ Bloc and no Talking Stick books. Remember, your tax donation is tax deductible. We are a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization.

August Meeting Minutes 2016

Hi Everyone,

We will skip our next meeting since it is on the same weekend as our TS25 Book Release Party. Our workshop with Faith Sullivan will be from 9 to 12 noon on Saturday Sept. 17, 2016 at The Patio near Hubbard MN. Lunch for the workshop attendees is from Noon to 1 PM. The book party is right after that from 1 till about 4 PM.

PRESENT: Ryan, Niomi, Jan, Sharon, Scott, Mike, Jerry.

WRITING EVENTS: The Northwoods Book and Art Festival in Hackensack last Saturday was a good time. It seemed like there were less crafts and tents than usual, but more booksellers. Mike sold lots of his Firewood Happens books and Tarah and Sharon sold quite a few Talking Stick books.

Jerry organized the JWB reading room at the Museum for the month of August to celebrate our 25^th book. This has been very popular. We discussed when we would take it down and the possibility of moving it to a room at the Armory.

TALKING STICK 25: The books have arrived! We will not hand any out till the book release party. Jerry’s book That Reminds Me will be here in a week or so.

TALKING STICK 25 BOOK RELEASE PARTY: This is coming up soon! Just 4 weeks away. Sharon will be checking final details with The Patio and the caterer. Hopefully we will save money this year with this new location but it will be a lot more work. If we can get the room set up the night before (tables and chairs), it will be ideal. We will have to supply pop, water, paper plates, etc. and get all those things hauled in that morning. Not to mention, all our books that will be for sale.

MISCELLANEOUS: Mike sold his books at Taste of Dorset and at the Wadena An Open Book bookstore. He and Jerry are scheduled to be at the Sept. 11 (Sunday) event at Farm by the Lake in Bagley MN. Mike is also scheduled for a Headwaters Lifelong Learning event coming up.

Scott brought in a book about writing called The Irresistible Novel by Jeff Gerke. This looked like a fun book to read. There were chapters on Adverbs, Outlining, etc. Then it said why some were in favor of it and how to use these things, and why some were opposed to it. It seemed to tell you pros and cons but leaves you in charge to decide how to use these various writing tools.

We took turns reading things we have been working on. As usual, we were amazed to see what others come up with. A great day and a great meeting. Hope to see you next time.
