July 24th 2005

We had our July meeting at Beagle Books in Park Rapids on Sunday, July 24. Present were: Ted, Jerry, Russ, Tarah, Sharon, Marion.

The next meeting will be held on Sunday, August 21 at Beagle Books from 1:30 to 4 pm.

The August 6, 2005 party is coming up. We have the Mark Vinz poetry workshop from 1 to 4:30 in Hubbard Hall followed by a meal in the Gazebo at Long Lake Theater, right across the street. Then, starting about 6 pm, there will be a program and readings, introduction of the winners in the three categories in Talking Stick 14. After that, more refreshments in the Gazebo. Should be great fun!! All three winners will be in attendance. Sadly, only 2 of the 3 judges will be able to attend. Will Weaver will not be able to be there. One of his short stories is being made into a movie and he needs to be in the Cities that day.

We have not gotten much information on this yet. This will be Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 13 and 14. Third Street in Park Rapids will be blocked off. There will be a stage and live music, readings, etc. We can have a table and sell books. We don’t know the times yet. Contact Sharon to sign up to read or sell books. sharrick1@wcta.net. As soon as we get more information, we will email everyone. Sounds like Marion and Jerry can attend on Saturday; Tarah and Sharon can attend on Sunday. We need more!!

Saturday, August 27 in Hackensack from 10 am to 4 pm. We have signed up for a table and readings. Great fun. Crafts, arts, music, food. Let Sharon know if you are interested. sharrick1@wcta.net.

The book is progressing. We hope to get the first draft mailed in this week. 188 pages compared to 96 and 128 the last couple of years. Book should be back sometime in September and the release party will be in October.

Tarah won first place with her photo Sorry I’m Late at the Regional Arts Contest in New York Mills at the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center. She also sold 3 or 4 prints. Good job, Tarah! This photo is part of the Lines and Lights Display that Tarah and Sharon have taken around to various museums and libraries. Right now it is on display at the Bemidji Public Library till mid August. Then we will take it to Hackensack for one day.

Marion, thank you for attending these meetings. We need to get our annual celebration on their schedule of events.

Jerry Mevissen will have his photos and prose Words and Images on display at the North Country Museum of Arts in Park Rapids soon. We will let everyone know of the dates.

Several of us brought works in progress to read. Ted brought some poems he had translated from German. Marion read from a chapbook entry called Whispering Pebbles. Jerry read a great short story about Julia Roberts. Russ and Sharon also read some new poems.

A great exercise is to rewrite a story of yours from a totally different point of view.

Here is a bit of information about a local concert. Friday, August 12 at 7 PM. Borderline Philharmonic orchestra. Bring you own lawn chairs. North on 71 and then 16 or 17 miles west on highway 113. On Long Lost Lake.
